Tornado destruction in Cartersville, GA

On Wednesday night, April 27, 2011 a massive storm passed through a large portion of the Southeast and through the city I live in. In the aftermath, numerous homes and businesses were destroyed and many things were ripped apart…but not the families and friends of this community.

By the following morning, numerous volunteers pitched in doing literally anything that has been needed from cleaning up debris to packing sack lunches for families and workers that are picking up the pieces.

Before we get to the list of ways to help, take a few minutes to watch the following video of the damage done in Bartow County…yes, everything in this video is just from Bartow county alone…incredible.

There are a variety of organizations and groups that are now setup if you’re interested in donating, volunteering, etc. Here are the ones that I have come across:

Federal Disaster Assistance
“Individuals and business owners who sustained losses in the designated county can begin applying for assistance today by registering online at www.disasterassistance.gov, by web-enabled mobile device at m.fema.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or 1-800-462-7585 for the hearing and speech impaired. The toll-free telephone numbers will operate from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. (local time) seven days a week until further notice.”

Bartow County Response Team organized by local churches
Local area churches have an organized effort to assist anyone in need of tornado relief. Call their hotline at 770-382-6652 or visit any of the three help centers listed below for food, toiletries, necessities, chainsaw work, etc.

Local churches have come together to provide an organized effort to assist those in need as well as coordinate donations, volunteers, etc. The command center is located at Grace Baptist Church in Cartersville and their hotline is 770-382-6652. If you’d like to volunteer in any way (organize clothing, do heavy lifting, deliver food donations, etc then be sure to start with them.)

Clothing, personal items, toiletries, non-perishable foods, etc can be dropped of at the primary distribution center at Grace Baptist Church. From there, the items will be delivered to various pickup points or directly to those in need.

United Way President Brenda Morehouse is encouraging residents to deliver monetary donations as well as contributions of food, beverages, generators or hygiene items to her office at 140 Douglas St., Suite 104, in Cartersville, GA. Also available by calling 770-386-1677.

Bartow County Commissioner’s Office
The Bartow County Commissioner’s Office will be opening a collection center starting Monday, May 2nd to collect and distribute items for the tornado victims.

Bartow County will be collecting items such as trash bags, shovels, first aid kits, hand sanitizer, etc for the tornado victims that can be delivered to 1657 Cassville Road (Stars Pre-K facility – building behind the gymnasium) from Monday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Bartow County Social Services Department (Monetary Donations)
Monetary donations can be made payable to the Bartow County Social Services Department, with a notation that it is to be used for storm relief efforts. Donations should be mailed or delivered to the Bartow County Commissioner’s Office, 135 W. Cherokee Ave., Suite 251, Cartersville, GA 30120.

NorthPointe Church in Adairsville
NorthPointe Church in Adairsville, 30 Orchard Road, Adairsville (770) 387-8135 is feeding families, taking donations and offering shelter and showers for residents in need from the storms. We also have a food pantry that is open Tues 10am, Thurs 6pm and Fri 10 am each week.

The Daily Tribune
Anyone unable to take donations to designated drop off sites can bring non-perishables, toiletries, boxes, etc. for the disaster victims to The Daily Tribune office, 251 S. Tennessee St. Mon-Fri. 8 a.m.-5.pm. and they will deliver to the appropriate agency for distribution.

Google Picasa for Mac Now Available

My favorite “photo organizer” of choice has long-been Google’s Picasa. It’s simple, easy-to-use, and gets the job done for most of my needs. I recommend it to just about everyone I know as it’s free and easy to teach people how to use it. However, I use a Mac about as much as I use a Windows computer and have longed for Google’s Picasa to come to the Mac since iPhoto has never really done it for me (sorry Apple). Well, Google Picasa for Mac is now available! Yep, you can now run Google Picasa on the Mac without weird virtual PCs or any crazy jazz. Just straight-up Google goodness on Apple goodness. Finally.

How to Send iPhone Photos to Picasa Web Albums

The iPhone continues to raise the bar in coolness for me each and every day. While my wife gets annoyed by it, I find it the coolest little thing since the birth of our son! Speaking of which, I take a lot of pics of our baby boy…many of the photos are snapped quickly on the iPhone. We host all of our photos on Google’s Picasa Web Albums and I’ve often wondered how to easily get the pics from my iPhone to my web albums quickly…cause some things need to be posted & shared right away! Well, fortunately for me, I work with two fellow iPhone junkies…one of which showed me exactly how to send iPhone pictures to Picasa Web Albums incredibly easy. Here’s how.

Go to Google’s Picasa Web Albums and login or create an account
Once you’re logged in, click “Settings” in the top-right corner.
Scroll down until you see the area shown below. You’ll want to check the checkbox and then create a “secret word”. You’ll notice it creates an email address of something like YourPicasaLoginName.YourSecretWord@picasaweb.com .
Now…grab your iPhone and go to the photo gallery and open a picture. Once you have a picture open, tap the little arrow at the bottom of the iPhone screen that gives you the option to email the photo.
Email the photo to YourPicasaLoginName.YourSecretWord@picasaweb.com . If you have a folder in Picasa Web Albums that you want the photo to go in, type the name of the folder in the subject line of the email. Otherwise, the photo will land in a “dropbox” where you can login to Picasa Web Albums and move it manually.

That’s it! Simple and easy way to send iPhone photos to Picasa Web Albums.

New Website and New Direction

If you have been to this website prior to April, 2008 then you know that it looked very different and was primarily a portfolio of my projects that I completed mostly while I was attending The Art Institute Online up until I graduated in 2006. I’m sure you’re wildly thrilled to see the things that I’ve done in the past, but I’m switching gears and will be starting to use this site differently…to benefit you.

I’ve been involved in interactive media and marketing since 1996 and I’ve not shared as much as I could have as far as what I’ve learned along the way. All of that is about to change. I’ll soon be revealing all of the tips, tricks, and advice I’ve picked up along the way that cover design, development, search engine optimization, internet marketing, offline marketing, and so much more. I’ll cover a wide gamut of topics that all involve interactive media in some way, so if you get geeky about any of these things then I suggest you stay tuned. How Do You Know an Employer Likes You?

I have to say that the people I work with at Fee / Hedrick Family Entertainment Group are amazing. Because of them, I don’t see working there as a “job”…they honestly make going to work incredibly enjoyable. I had an overwhelming reminder of that today as I had a HUGE surprise for me at lunch. A few of us typically go to lunch every Wednesday and some of them wanted to eat at The Alabama Grill today. As we walked in, there was a massive table where about 30 employees were sitting. I thought they were having a meeting, but all of a sudden they started clapping and cheering when i walked around the corner. I was puzzled at first and then I saw “Congratulations” on a banner, a chocolate cake made by the executive chef of the company’s catering division, and a rather large giftbox. I suddenly realized they were all there for me!

Kathy Turner, the Creative Director of the company, had organized this massive get-together to celebrate my recent graduation, upcoming wedding, and impending departure from the company to start my new life in GA. I have never seen this many people in the company together in one place at the same time…ever…not even the Christmas Party! I was completely floored. People from at least two theaters, three shows, and three businesses showed up…over 30 people in all! The president and vice-president were there along with general managers, marketing and sales directors, etc etc. A lot of great things were said and it’s something I’ll never forget. The people that came and that I work with every day are simply amazing. I love them like family and hope that the career I take in GA will have people that are just as great. Kathy has been an incredible person to work with and the company is extremely fortunate to have her as their Creative Director. I just can’t say enough about her and the rest of the staff!

As for the giftbox…well…I went to open it up and it was FILLED with dollar bills! I thought for a minute that it was tissue paper, but I then realized it was real! Everyone had pitched in to create this huge box of money. I just don’t know how I’m going to get this thing through the teller window at the bank…

Whew…WHAT a day! The money was a great gift, but the amount of people that showed up and signed the card meant so much to me. I know everyone had a ton of things going on at each business in the company and knowing they took time out of their day to be a part of this is simply amazing. I’m still floored. So yeah, this was one of those moments when you realize just how much an employer likes you! It’s a day I’ll never forget.
