Project Description:

Star 102.1 is a radio station based out of Knoxville, TN that I often listen to. They ran a Photoshop contest where contestants used images of the morning talk-show hosts off of the radio station website to Photoshop them into something else. I decided to enter the contest and chose the following two images from the site:

I then took the images and Photoshopped them into the TROY movie poster (which was the current movie at the time) I placed their heads onto the bodies of the couple in the center of the poster. I then changed the name of the movie to STAR (The name of the radio station) and the actors’ names to the talk-show hosts’ names. Finally I gave everything the same texture and coloring as the original images and text.

Click here to see the before and after posters:

There ended up being around 60 entries total in which Marc and Kim chose their favorites. Marc chose mine and Kim chose one where someone made her look like Marilyn Monroe. Marc conceded because Kim loved Marilyn Monroe so I came in second overall out of 60 people.

Project Description:

My final project for the Digital Image Manipulation class at The Art Institute Online was to create an advertisement for a fictitious ice cream company named “Jolly Humor Ice Cream.” We were free to come up with the ad campaign and design it however we wanted. Here is the concept that I pitched:

The concept for this design is to build a relationship with the customers of Jolly Humor Ice Cream. This requires grabbing the reader’s attention through curiosity and then delivering a lasting impression that the person will subconsciously think about when they have ice cream on the mind.

The solution to build this relationship is a mock rendition of a personals ad. At first glance, the viewer is drawn into the ad by use of the bright red thumbtack. This causes the person to immediately read the ad before the bottom “hook”. The ad seems like any typical singles ad, with significance placed on “sense of humor” being a must. As the reader looks at the bottom of the page, they find an ice cream cone with the text “Meet your new love” below it. This immediately establishes a relationship with the reader.

Besides, if the customer ever tries another brand of ice cream after seeing this ad, he or she will feel as if they are cheating on Jolly Humor! Laughing

Click the image below to see the ad.

Project Details:

The Jolly Humor Ice Cream ad was created with Adobe Photoshop with the following manipulations:

Scanned a corkboard and added lighting from left to right for dramatic effect

Created thumbtack and added shadow for it

Created newspaper clipping with the page curl, shadow, and highlights

Created text for ad and then “weathered” the text for a newspaper look

Created brown bevel for the corkboard

Modified a stock photo of an ice cream cone to give it the same lighting as the corkboard

Cleaned up the image of the ice cream to make it cleaner and “richer”

Created text effect for Jolly Humor Ice Cream logo

Project Description:

Another project for the first marketing phase of The Miracle Theater was an image of a “Holy Angel” to use in the same pieces with the Evil Eyes. Well, we didn’t exactly know where to find a “Holy Angel” so we made one! The wardrobe and props crew outfitted a guy with wings, armor, sword, etc and then had me take a picture of him. I then took the original image (shot against a black backdrop…oof) and ran it through Photoshop to create the final product below.

Hover your cursor over the image to see the original photo:

The changes that were made to give him more of a “Holy” look were:

Brightened his wings with the Dodge tool

Colored his hair and added highlights, midtones, and shadows…added more detail

Added a halo with a spiked effect

Pumped up his bicep a bit

Brightened and saturated his armor and clothing

Added detail to the sword and brightened it

Replaced his shield

Completely cut out his figure to be placed on any background necessary

Added glow to entire image

The final product has been used on major billboards, brochures, posters, magazine ads & articles, etc.

Project Description:

As we were developing a marketing campaign for The Miracle Theater we had very little photos, graphics, etc to work with so we were somewhat forced to conjure up images that stirred the emotions of the target audience. The show is based on the life of Jesus Christ and the miracles that surrounded Him. A large part of the show is how Jesus overcame Satan’s temptations, so there needed to be some sort of evil imagery. That’s where I came in…I don’t know if it’s a good thing or a bad thing that they came to me wanting to create something evil!

The Creative Director had gone through numerous stock photos of eyes and picked out a shot of a single eye that could possibly be manipulated:

With that single image, I put it through the ringer in Photoshop to turn it into the image below:

As you can see, there is quite a difference…a scary difference! Some of the manipulations that I made were:

Duplicated the eye to make a “face”

Created the bridge of the nose to look almost as if it’s on fire

Major work done to the eyes as they are colored in red and outlined in yellow…then a cat-eye effect was added

Burn tool used extensively to darken eyebrows, lashes, and shadow areas around the eyes

The image has been used on major billboards, signs, brochures, posters, magazine ads, websites, and more. It definitely got attention and buzz going as millions of people were exposed to it on a billboard along the main highway coming into town.
